March 28, 2008
PROVO, Utah - The San Diego State women's tennis team dropped a close 4-3 decision to No. 56 Utah in its Mountain West Conference opener at BYU's indoor tennis facility. The Aztecs fall to 7-8 overall and 0-1 in league play, while the Utes improve to 10-5, 1-0 MWC.
The Utes dominated doubles play as they topped the Aztecs on each court. Kathryn Kitts and Julia Trunk were unable to find their rhythm in an 8-1 loss to Evgenia Kryuchkova and Leigh Walsh at No. 2. Utah then clinched the point at the top of the ladder as Sisse Nielsen and Eliska Krausova suffered an 8-3 defeat at the hands of the 41st-ranked duo of Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok. Despite a valiant effort from Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov, SDSU was unable to prevent the sweep with the Aztec tandem falling to Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan, 8-6.
Utah jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in singles action with wins at the top two spots, but the Aztecs started to mount a comeback when Esther Cadua downed Monson 6-1, 6-4, picking up her fourth consecutive victory. Krausova then posted a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Kwok on court three to cut the Aztecs' deficit to one (3-2), but Utah would clinch the match at No. 6 as Nielsen dropped a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 decision to Karine Bourdages.
Yusupov rounded out the day by outlasting Walsh, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 5 position.
San Diego State will continue its Mountain West Conference slate tomorrow against host and 47th-ranked Brigham Young. First serve is scheduled for 9 a.m. (PDT) if the match is played indoors and 10 a.m. (PDT) if weather permits outdoor play.
