SAN DIEGO - SDSU-SACRAMENTO STATE HIGHLIGHTS
On Thursday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center, the 56th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team picked up its 10th win on the season, just edging Sacramento State, 4-3. SDSU swept doubles play to take the point and fought in singles action to take the match. The Aztecs are now 10-4 on the season.
San Diego State took a dominant early lead by sweeping all matches in doubles play. Julia Wais and Kristin Buth were the first Aztecs to finish, downing Katharina Knoebl and Jennifer Nguyen on court No. 2, 8-2. In first doubles, Michela Casanova and Laura Antonana Iriarte snuck by Rebeca Delgado and Olivia Boija, 9-8 (5), to clinch the point. Finishing the sweep was Alicia Aguilar and Isabelle Hoorn on court No. 3, defeating Sophie Lohscheidt and Andrea Gomez Carus, 9-7.
In singles play, court No. 3 would see the first finish of the day as Lohscheidt would drop the first set only to default in the second to Antonana Iriarte, 6-1, def. In sixth singles, Casanova would give SDSU a 3-0 lead as she dismissed Siobhan Ryan-Bovey, 6-2, 6-3. Sacramento State attempted to stage a rally, beginning in fifth singles as Knoebl topped Tami Nguyen, 6-2, 6-4. Jennifer Nguyen would give the Hornets their second point as she defeated Aguilar on court No. 2, 6-4, 6-1. Delgado would bring the score to three all in first singles as she got past Wais, 6-3, 6-3. On court No. 4, Buth would emerge as San Diego State's closer as she clinched the win, downing Boija, 6-2, 7-5.
Up next, the Aztecs will travel across town to face the University of San Diego on Monday, April 1 at 11 am PT.
