SDSU Women's Tennis Upsets No. 31 Oregon, 5-2
April 6, 2007
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team posted its sixth victory in seven matches on Friday with a 5-2 decision over No. 31 Oregon in a non-conference showdown at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU, ranked 65th in the latest ITA poll, upset the Ducks for the second straight year to raise its record to 11-9 overall. Meanwhile, UO falls to 11-8 on the season after losing for the third time in a row.
After failing to capture the doubles point in their last three outings, head coach Peter Mattera shuffled his lineup against the Ducks with all three Aztec tandems joining forces together for the first time since the fall tournament season. Holly Bagshaw and Kathryn Kitts got things rolling for the Scarlet and Black after cruising to an 8-3 triumph over Tina Snodgrass and Carmen Seremeta at the No. 3 position. Eliska Krausova and Sisse Nielsen then clinched the point for the Aztecs after toppling Anna Powaska and Monica Hoz de Vila, 8-5, at the No. 2 spot. SDSU just missed out on a sweep when Alesya Vidov and Milana Yusupov dropped an epic battle to Dominika Dieskova and Ana Cecilia Olivos, 9-8(8).
Inspired by their good fortune in doubles, the Aztecs rode that momentum into singles play by taking four of six matches. First off the court was Nielsen, who made quick work of Snodgrass at the No. 6 position, 6-0, 6-1, while Krausova knocked off Olivos, 6-2, 6-4, in the second spot, giving SDSU a seemingly comfortable 3-0 cushion.
Oregon would not go quietly as Dieskova prevailed by a 6-4, 6-2 count over Vidov on the No. 1 court. Shortly thereafter, Hoz de Vila outlasted Esther Cadua, 6-4, 7-6(4), at the fourth position, which trimmed San Diego State's lead to 3-2. Over at No. 3, the Ducks were primed to tie the match after Seremeta grabbed an early one-set lead over Bagshaw. However, the Aztec sophomore stormed back with a vengeance, losing just two games the rest of the way en route to a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 triumph, which provided the clinching team point.
Meanwhile, Yusupov dispatched Powaska, 7-5, 6-4, in a seesaw battle at the fifth spot to account for the final score.
SDSU returns to action on Tuesday, April 10, when it travels down Interstate 8 for a clash with cross-town rival San Diego at USD's West Courts. The Aztecs' final non-conference match of the regular season is scheduled to get underway at 1:30 p.m. PDT.
