SDSU Women's Tennis Drops 5-2 Decision to USD
April 11, 2012
SAN DIEGO -Julia Wais extended her personal-best singles winning streak to 10 matches, but her effort alone was not enough as the Aztecs were on the short end of a 5-2 score against USD Wednesday afternoon at Aztec Tennis Center. The loss drops SDSU to 9-11 overall, while the Toreros even their record at 8-8.
Wais recorded her ninth consecutive straight-sets victory after she dismissed USD's Juliette Coupez, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 1. The decision brought San Diego State to within one of the Toreros at 2-1 after the Aztecs were swept in doubles and USD's Maja Sujica was victorious against Sierra Ellison at No. 5.
Kristin Buth continued her impressive first season at San Diego State with her win at No. 6. The freshman downed Marite Raygada, 6-0, 6-4, to record her fourth consecutive victory. Buth's effort leveled the score at 2-2 with three matches to play.
Unfortunately for the Aztecs, Laura Antonana Iriarte fell victim to Laura Claus, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 3, to give the Toreros a 3-2 lead.
San Diego State still had an opportunity to pull out the win, but USD earned a pair of hard-fought three-set victories to propel it past the Aztecs. No. 117 Anna Depenau, playing at No. 5, recorded a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 decision over Alicia Aguilar, which ended the junior's six-match winning streak. Then at No. 2, Stephanie Hoffpauir downed Emma Cioffi, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, to end the day's scoring.
SDSU returns to action on Saturday when it faces No. 51 UNLV in Las Vegas. The Mountain West regular-season finale is scheduled for a 10 a.m. PT start at Fertitta Tennis Complex.
