Women's Tennis Knocks off UCSD, 6-1
April 13, 2014
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team stepped out of Mountain West play Sunday to battle crosstown foe UC San Diego and came away with a 6-1 triumph in a non-conference dual match at Aztec Tennis Center. With the victory, SDSU moves to 10-11 on the season, while the Division II Tritons fall to 8-16 overall.
The 75th-ranked Aztecs established a dominating tone early by sweeping all three matches in doubles competition. First off the court was the No. 3 duo of Laura Antonaña Iriarte and Isabelle Hoorn, who posted an 8-0 shutout of UCSD's Tara Vanooteghem and Laura Wilke, while the tandem of Kristin Buth and Kennedy Davis recorded an identical 8-0 blanking of Nava Nowamooz and Shannon Theisen on the second court shortly thereafter. With the doubles point safely tucked away, the No. 1 pairing of Dora Somoracz and Hailey Johnson outlasted the Triton twosome of Kyra Scott and Paula Chou, 8-6.
SDSU continued its strong performance in singles play, capturing five of the six encounters in straight sets. On the No. 5 court, Hoorn got things rolling for the Scarlet and Black with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Theisen, while Tami Nguyen faced minimal resistance in a 6-0, 6-0 conquest of Nowamooz in the fourth position. Over on court No. 2, Buth provided the match-clinching point after dispatching Chou by a 6-3, 6-0 count, while Johnson was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Liza Brusman in the sixth spot.
The Aztecs soon extended their lead to 5-0 as Iriarte, ranked 44th nationally in the latest ITA singles poll, emerged triumphant with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Scott on center court. SDSU was foiled in its bid for a shutout, however, as Vanooteghem prevailed in a three-set thriller over Davis, 6-4, 2-6, 15-13, at No. 4.
SDSU resumes its quest for city supremacy on Tuesday, April 15, when it locks horns with the University of San Diego in another non-league tilt at Aztec Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m. PDT.
