SDSU Women's Tennis Defeats Utah, 6-1, for Fifth Straight Win
April 14, 2007
SAN DIEGO - The 56th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team won its fifth consecutive match on Saturday with a 6-1 conquest of Utah in a Mountain West Conference dual at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU grabbed the early doubles point and never looked back, capturing five of six singles encounters en route to the convincing win. With the victory, the Aztecs raise their record to 14-9 on the season and 6-1 in the MWC, while the Utes drop to 13-10 and 3-5 in conference action.
SDSU jumped out of the gates in doubles play as the duo of Holly Bagshaw and Kathryn Kitts cruised past Karine Bourdages and Andrea Maughan by an 8-2 margin at the No. 3 position. Moments later, the tandem of Eliska Krausova and Sisse Nielsen clinched the point for the Scarlet and Black with an 8-4 triumph over Cheyenne Reveche and Emily Kwok over on the No. 2 court. Utah avoided a sweep when Elizabeth Ferris and Leigh Walsh escaped with a narrow 8-7(3) decision over the team of Alesya Vidov and Milana Yusupov in a tiebreaker at No. 1.
Leading 1-0, SDSU seized control in singles competition, winning the first three matches in straight sets to secure the victory. First off the court was Nielsen, who prevailed by a 6-0, 6-4 count over Bourdages at the No. 6 position. Krausova soon followed after pinning a 6-4, 6-3 defeat on Kwok in the No. 2 spot, giving the Aztecs an insurmountable 3-0 advantage. Esther Cadua then provided the clincher with a 7-5, 6-1 effort over Reveche at No. 4.
With the final outcome no longer in question, the three remaining contests were completed in a super-tiebreaker format. Bagshaw pocketed her fifth straight win after overcoming a one-set deficit to topple Walsh, 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-4, at the third position. Over on the No. 1 court, Vidov experienced similar circumstances against Ferris, rallying past her Utah adversary, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8, to break a three-match losing skid. SDSU was thwarted in its bid for a shutout when Yusupov dropped a hard-fought decision to Maughan, 6-7(6), 6-4, 11-9, in the fourth spot.
San Diego State wraps up its regular season schedule on Sunday, April 15 when it tangles with No. 60 UNLV at Aztec Tennis Center, beginning at noon PDT. Prior to the match, SDSU will honor its two seniors, Alesya Vidov and Yuki Hagiwara.
