WT Remains Perfect In League Play; Edges Nevada, 4-3

LAS VEGAS - The San Diego State women's tennis team remained undefeated on Sunday as the 48th-ranked Aztecs got past Nevada, 4-3. SDSU fell behind early by dropping the doubles point but did just enough in singles play to get the win. The Aztecs move up to 16-4 on the season and retain their hold on first place in the Mountain West with a 5-0 league record.
Nevada got on the board first as Michelle Okremchuck and Emma Verberne defeated Michela Casanova and Laura Antonana Iriarte in first doubles, 8-2. On court No. 3, Alicia Aguilar and Isabelle Hoorn evened things out by downing Sheila Smiley and Carolina Konigsfeldt, 8-4. Despite their best efforts, Julia Wais and Kristin Buth could not finish off Sophie Stevens and Juliette Legendre, with the two members of the Wolf Pack clinching the point, 8-6.
In singles play, Buth completed an impressive win over Smiley on court No. 4, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Tami Nguyen would give SDSU its first lead of the day by downing Legendre in fifth singles, 6-2, 6-4. On court No. 1, Okremchuck tied things up at 2-all by topping Wais, 6-4, 6-4. In sixth singles, Casanova pulled the Aztecs ahead once again by defeating Monika Magusiak, 7-5, 6-3. On court No. 3, Antonana Iriarte guaranteed the victory for San Diego State by coming out on top in her clash with Stevens, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3). With the win in hand for SDSU, second singles saw Aguilar battle with Verberne as the Nevada senior took the match, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-0).
The Aztecs will get back into action on Tuesday, April 16 at 2 pm PT at Aztec Tennis Center when the team will celebrate senior day and face UC San Diego.
