SAN DIEGO - The 24th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team wrapped up its 2002 regular season on Tuesday with a 6-1 victory over in-city rival University of San Diego at SDSU Courts. The day also served as senior day for the Aztecs, with Katey Becker and Julie Chidley being honored in a pre-match ceremony.
SDSU (16-7) started the day off with a sweep of doubles play, winning 8-5 at No. 1, 8-6 at No. 2 and 8-3 at No. 3.
The Aztec streak continued into singles play, with Silvia Tonier and Lindsey Hedberg picking up wins at No. 1 and 2, respectively.
Becker and Chidley had a memorable senior day, with each defeating their opponent. Becker won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 and Chidley 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot.
The Aztecs' sixth point of the afternoon came via a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 by Indra Erichsen.
SDSU's lone loss of the day came at No. 3 singles, with Katalina Romero losing to the Toreros' Paola Arrangoiz, 6-3, 6-2.
The Aztecs will now take some time off from competition to prepare for the Mountain West Conference Championships to be held April 25-27 in Provo, Utah. The Aztecs enter the tournament as the top seed. The league champion receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships.
