W. Tennis Extends Win Streak; Keeps Hold On MW Top Spot

GREELEY, Colo. - The 41st-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team traveled to Colorado to conclude regular season and Mountain West play on Thursday. The Aztecs opened the first of three matches in three days by dismissing Colorado State, 6-0. The decisive win puts SDSU at 18-4 overall on the season and 6-0 in conference standings. The Aztecs maintain their hold on first place in the Mountain West and have extended their winning streak to 11 matches.
Due to weather in surrounding Fort Collins, Colo., today's match was moved indoors to Greeley, Colo. The Rams and Aztecs were forced to play on four courts and would forgo doubles play.
Singles action would decide the match and senior Julia Wais was the first SDSU player to post a win. Wais showed Abby Stevens the door in first singles, 6-2, 6-2, just as Laura Antonana Iriarte finished off Kaley Schultz, 6-0, 6-3. On court No. 3, Kristin Buth downed Kendall Heitzner, 6-2, 6-2. San Diego State senior Alicia Aguilar defeated Natalie Heffron in second singles, 6-3, 6-2. Michela Casanova continued her impressive play by downing Lauren Pick in sixth singles, 6-3, 2-1, ret. Freshman Tami Nguyen would finish the sweep by defeating Adriana Wojakowska, 6-2, 6-0.
With victories at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, Antonana Iriarte and Casanova extended their team and season-high winning streaks to 11 matches each. The two Aztecs have not lost in singles competition since March 17.
San Diego State will put its 11-match win streak and perfect league record on the line when it faces Wyoming tomorrow at 1 pm MT in Greeley, Colo. Saturday will see the final match of the regular season for SDSU against Air Force at 10 am MT.
If the Aztecs beat the Cowgirls or Falcons, they will clinch at least a share of the MW title, their first since the 2003 campaign.
