April 19, 2013
GREELEY, Colo. - The 41st-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team stretched its winning streak to 12-straight matches, kept its perfect league record, clinched at least a share of the Mountain West title and guaranteed the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament on Friday. The Aztecs defeated Wyoming, 5-1, in Greeley, Colo., to move up to 19-4 overall and 7-0 in league play.
For the second day in a row, doubles action was not played due to teams being forced indoors caused by inclement weather.
Once again, SDSU's top player was the first to put the Aztecs on the board. Senior Julia Wais took care of Veronica Popovici, 6-2, 6-0, on court No. 1. Fellow senior, Alicia Aguilar, notched the second point for San Diego State as she topped Simona Synkova in second singles, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Michela Casanova extended her singles winning streak to 12 matches by downing Silviya Zhelyazkova on court No. 6, 6-3, 6-1. On court No. 3, Laura Antonana Iriarte would also push her singles win streak to 12 matches and would seal the victory for San Diego State by defeating Alexandra Kovacs in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2. Freshman Tami Nguyen would add another point for the Aztecs by dismissing Jessica Parizher in fifth singles, 7-6 (5), 7-5. The Cowgirls would pick up one point on the day, coming in fourth singles after a battle between Sasa Nemcova and Aztec Kristin Buth, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (5).
San Diego State will see the final match of the regular season tomorrow against Air Force at 11 am MT in Colorado Springs, Colo.
With the win over Wyoming, the Aztecs have clinched at least a share of the MW title, their first since the 2003 campaign. If they can defeat the Falcons tomorrow, SDSU will secure the conference title outright, the first solo distinction since the 2002 season.
