Oct. 5, 2003
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sophomore Dita Hauerlandova and senior Katalina Romero finished second and third in Flight A singles at the 2003 SDSU Fall Classic, which concluded Sunday.
Hauerlandova, who defeated a seeded-player en route to reaching the championship match, fell to Jenny McGaffigan of Illinois, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in the final. In the third-place match, Romero defeated Anna Dybick of Arkansas, 6-2, 6-2. Hauerlandova and Romero combined to post a 4-2 record in an eight-player field that featured two ranked players.
In Flight B singles, junior Patricia Graf claimed the consolation crown with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Melissa Cornet of Arkansas. San Diego State's Alesya Vidov was victorious in her consolation match in Flight C singles with a straight-set win over Illinois' Paulina Akritas.
Due to time constraints, several of the Sunday matches were not played including the highly-anticipated final in Flight A doubles between 44th-ranked Indra Erichsen and Katalina Romero and Isabel Jarosz and Tiffany Eklov of Illinois. Nonetheless, it was a productive tournament for the Aztec pair, which recorded a victory over the 31st-ranked doubles team in the country in the semifinal round.
Sunday concluded the three-day, five-team tournament on the San Diego State campus. Next up for the Aztec women is the All-American Qualifying Tournament in Los Angeles beginning on Tuesday.
