Oct. 20, 2017
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's tennis wrapped day two of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center, where they fell out of championship play with three losses in round of 32 doubles. The team came away with a win in consolation doubles play, and notched three wins and two losses in singles consolation matches.
Junior Jenny Moinard and sophomore Mia Smith took on Laura Gulbe and Dzina Milovanovic of Pepperdine in the round of 32, where they fell 8-4. Junior Magda Aubets and freshman Nnena Nadozie faced similar fates, dropping their round of 32 match against LBSU's Natalia Munoz and Lena Pacholski, 8-4, and sophomore Berta Acero and freshman Abbie Mulbarger struggled to overcome No. 5 seed Gabby Smith and Madison Westby of USC, dropping 8-6.
In doubles consolation play, seniors Jana Buth and Paola Diaz went up against Caisey Emery and Genevieve Zeidan of CSUF, edging out the competition 9-8 (13) to nab the Aztecs' first win of the day.
Singles play was slowed over the course of the afternoon as several matches were halted by rain in the area. In the first set of singles matchups, Aubets survived CSUN's Mari Taslagyan, 7-5, 6-4, while Diaz edged out Gillian Parker (UCI) 6-4, 6-3. Acero logged the fourth SDSU win of the afternoon with a solid 6-0, 6-2 victory over CSUF's Taylor Valenzuela. Moinard also nabbed a win over CSUF's Masako Makiba, 6-2, 6-4, in consolation play.
Mulbarger had a tough time against USD's Sophia Chow and was eventually defeated, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 10-5, in singles consolation play. Nadozie also faced challenges in her afternoon singles matchup, falling 8-6 to Yesica De Lucas (LMU).
The Aztecs no longer remain in the hunt at ITA Regionals and will not be playing in Saturday or Sunday's events, but are set to participate in a handful of consolation events on the final day, Monday, Oct. 23.
