Aztecs Eliminated in Quarters at Southwest Regionals
Oct. 22, 2011
SAN DIEGO -
San Diego State's two nationally ranked doubles teams were eliminated Saturday in the quarterfinal round at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship at Barnes Tennis Center.
Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais, ranked 47th nationally and the tournament's fifth seed, bounced cross-town foes Anna Depenau and Maja Sujica of San Diego, 8-3, in the round of 16. In the quarters, however, the Aztec duo was ousted by Depenau and Sujica's teammates, Juliette Coupez and Stephanie Hoffpauir. The 43rd-ranked and third-seeded tandem from USD defeated Aguilar and Wais, 8-3, after advancing to the quarters as a result of their round of 16 opponent withdrawing due to injury.
Sierra Ellison and Roxanne Ellison, meanwhile, advanced to the quarterfinals following their 8-5 triumph over Joanna Smith and Nicole Smith of Arizona State. Sixth-seeded Ellison/Ellison, ranked 59th in Division I, then faced the UCLA team of Robin Anderson and Skylar Moton. The 10th-seeded group, which upset the top-seeded team from Pepperdine in the round of 16, continued their run by defeating SDSU's senior twosome, 8-3.
The Aztecs are eliminated from regional play, but the action will continue Sunday at Barnes Tennis Center.
