Oct. 23, 2008
SAN DIEGO -
Three Aztecs stayed alive in the singles main draw of the Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships as the San Diego State women's tennis team kicked off the five-day event on Thursday at Barnes Tennis Center. Along with the University of San Diego, SDSU is co-hosting the 16-team tournament.
The first day got underway with doubles action in the morning. Olivia Colman and Kathryn Kitts jumped out to a quick start as they teamed up to down UCLA's Jordan Heitzner and Brittany Rosen, 8-2. Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov were not as fortunate, however, dropping a narrow 8-6 decision to Deborah Armstrong and Lisa Sutton of Long Beach State.
The Aztec duos of Holly Bagshaw/Julia Trunk and Roxanne Ellison/Sierra Ellison, who both received first-round byes, will join Colman/Kitts in the round of 32 when they hit the courts tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.
In singles action, SDSU won a total of six matches with Bagshaw, Trunk and Roxanne Ellison all advancing to the round of 32.
