W. Tennis logs several wins Friday at Fall Classic II

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's tennis finished day one of the SDSU Fall Classic II with victories in three of four doubles matchups and six of eight singles rounds on Friday. The team's final fall tournament continues Saturday, Nov. 11, at 9 a.m. at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Aztecs got off to a strong start this morning, notching three wins in doubles play. Seniors Jana Buth and Paola Diaz faced off against Cal Poly's Molly Reed and Grace Olyphant in the black doubles draw, dominating the Mustangs 6-2. Buth/Diaz are set to face USD's Torres/Chow in the semifinals tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
In the blue doubles bracket, sophomore Mia Smith and junior Jenny Moinard finished off Renne Ren and Sarah Hu of Columbia, 6-4, while freshman Nnena Nadozie and junior Magda Aubets downed Air Force's Meredith Jones and Camryn Deames, 6-2. Smith/Moinard will take on Soares/Medina (LU) in tomorrow's doubles semifinals while Nadozie/Aubets square off against Jones/Deames (AFA).
The Aztecs dropped just one singles match on Friday, as sophomore Berta Acero and freshman Abbie Mulbarger struggled against Utah's Jasmine Rich and Victoria Robertson, dropping 6-3. Acero/Mulbarger will face Hatcliff/Laskey (AFA) in the consolation semifinals tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Moving into singles action, the Scarlet and Black remained hot in the 10 o'clock hour as Buth logged a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Liberty's Maria Medina in the red draw, and Diaz took her match to three sets for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over AFA's Meredith Laskey in the white bracket. Buth advances to the semifinals with a match against Susanne Boyden (CP) tomorrow while Diaz plays Colorado's Chloe Hule. Both matches are set for 11:15 a.m.
Nadozie was the first Aztec to drop a match in the first set of singles, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Cal Poly's Reed in the greed draw. She continues the tournament in the consolation draw tomorrow and is set to face Whitney Turley at 11:15 a.m.
SDSU kept rolling in the second group of singles matches as Mulbarger downed AFA's Clarissa Jolley, 6-2, 6-0, and Smith finished off Celine Gruaz (CP) 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in the black bracket. Following her win Friday, Mulbarger moves on to the semifinals and is set for a 10 a.m. matchup against Liberty's Rebekah Anderson on Saturday.
Aubets fought a tough matchup in the silver draw, dropping 6-2, 6-2 to Paulina Ferrari (COLUM), but Moinard was able to nab another Aztec victory with a 6-2, 6-2 finish over Columbia's Ren in the gold bracket. Aubets continues tomorrow morning with a consolation match against Caroline Williams (CP), while Moinard advances to the semifinals in the championship bracket to take on Grace Olyphant (CP). Both matches are set for 10 a.m.
Logging the final SDSU victory of the day was Acero, who handed Rich (UTAH) a 6-3, 6-1 in the 12:30 p.m. round robin event. She moves on to face Cal Poly's Abby Bacharach in the round robin at 10 a.m.
Draws will be updated daily on GoAztecs.com. Admission to Fall Classic II is free and fans are encouraged to park in P7 on the corner of 55th Street and Montezuma Road. Parking is $2 per hour and is always required in P7. The Aztec Tennis Center is located just beyond Tony Gwynn Stadium, SDSU Softball Stadium and the Aztec Aquaplex on the northwest edge of campus.
