Antonaña Iriarte Tabbed As MW WT Player of the Week
Jan. 22, 2014
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior women's tennis player Laura Antonaña Iriarte was named the Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. The award is the first honor handed out by the league for the 2014 season and is the first of the senior's career.
Antonaña Iriarte, the Aztecs' lone senior, earned the weekly accolade after posting four wins to help SDSU begin the 2014 dual-match campaign with a 2-0 record. The San Sebastian, Spain native teamed up with Kristin Buth to blank Pattugalan and Jue of UC Riverside in second doubles on Saturday. Antonana Iriarte would follow up with a win in first singles over Jasmine Almaguer, 6-1, 6-1.
The senior would duplicate her success from earlier in the day in the second half of the season-opening doubleheader, against Cal State Fullerton. Once again paired with Buth, the duo clinched the doubles point for San Diego State by dismissing McIntosh and De Leon, 6-3. Antonaña Iriarte capped the day's action by defeating Alexis Valenzuela in first singles, 6-2, 6-2.
The 46th-ranked Aztecs will get back onto the courts on Saturday when they travel north to take on No. 45 Long Beach State at noon.
