No. 58 SDSU Women's Tennis to Face Pac-10 Trio this week
Feb. 7, 2011
SAN DIEGO - Coming off of its first loss of the season, the San Diego State women's tennis team will face three Pac-10 Conference teams in what amounts to the team's toughest stretch of the season. This week the No. 58 Aztecs will take on No. 19 USC on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Los Angeles before returning home for matches against No. 51 Arizona (Friday, 2 p.m.) and No. 8 California (Saturday, noon).
This past Saturday SDSU suffered its first defeat of 2011, falling 6-1 to the 15th-ranked Washington Huskies, another Pac-10 squad. The Aztecs only point of the day occurred after winning the doubles point, which they have earned in every match this season. SDSU duo Julia Trunk and Emma Cioffi took one match, 8-3, and Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais won the clincher, 9-7. Singles did not go as well, however, as SDSU lost all six to the Huskies. With the loss, the Aztecs dropped to 3-1 for the season.
USC is ranked No. 19 and is coming off a 5-2 loss at No. 8 Michigan. Senior Maria Sanchez won her singles match in Ann Arbor and is the third-ranked player in the nation. The Women of Troy are 3-1 for the season.
No. 51 Arizona visits Aztec Tennis Center after its 6-1 victory over future Mountain West member, Nevada. The Wildcats' win kicks them up to 5-1 for 2011.
As of Monday, the No. 8 Golden Bears have won all three matches in which they have participated. Most recently the Bears beat No. 4 UCLA, 4-3. Cal faces No. 50 Pepperdine prior to arriving in San Diego to take on the Aztecs.
