W. Tennis welcomes BYU, USD this weekend
Feb. 8, 2018
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team continues its home contests this weekend when it hosts Brigham Young on Saturday and University of San Diego Sunday. The Aztecs enter this weekend's matches with a 5-1 record after defeating Point Loma, 7-0, on Monday afternoon.
The Cougars (1-0) face the Aztecs following two other Southern California stops this week. BYU visits UC Irvine Thursday afternoon, followed by Long Beach State on Friday before completing the road trip at the Aztec Tennis Center Saturday at noon. The Cougars earned a sweep of Weber State in their home opener last Friday. The last meeting between BYU and SDSU was on April 15, 2011, where the Aztecs swept the Cougars, 7-0, at the ATC. The last meeting was also played when BYU's women's tennis program was in its final year as a member of the Mountain West Conference.
A regular fixture on the Aztecs' spring schedule, SDSU most recently faced the Toreros in dual match play last March where the Toreros enjoyed a 4-1 home victory over the Aztecs. SDSU also hosted the Toreros this fall in their annual Fall Classic II, where notable finishes over USD included junior Jenny Moinard and sophomore Mia Smith's 6-2 doubles victory in the championship draw over Anderson/Kukaras, senior Jana Buth's 6-1, 6-4 championship win over Daniela Morales, and Moinard's 7-5, 6-2 championship match against Kukaras. The Toreros currently sit at 1-3 on the season, logging losses against USC (6-1), Oregon (6-1) and most recently Arizona (4-3), but captured a win at Grand Canyon (4-1). USD is set to play Hawai'i Thursday afternoon at home before making Sunday's trip across I-8.
The Aztecs look to continue their perfect home streak following the team's wins over UC Davis and PLNU last weekend. Though SDSU faced a tough road loss early in the week to a ranked California team, the Aztecs bounced back Saturday to edge UC Davis, 4-3, before shutting down PLNU, 7-0, on Monday.
Both matches this weekend are set to begin at noon at the ATC. Results from Saturday and Sunday's duals will be available on www.GoAztecs.com once matches conclude. Following this weekend's events, the Aztecs will finish off their home stand by hosting USC Friday, Feb. 16, and Cal Poly Saturday, Feb. 17.
