Antonaña Iriarte Named MW WT Player of the Week

Senior Antonaña Iriarte was named the MW WT POW on Wednesday.

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Laura Antonaña Iriarte was named the Mountain West Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday. With her award, the San Sebastian, Spain native has garnered conference weekly accolades in two out of the four weeks it has been presented this season.

Antonaña Iriarte earned the honor after pulling a huge upset over No. 19 Lorraine Guillermo of 44th-ranked Pepperdine, 6-4, 7-5, on Saturday, Feb. 8. The Aztec senior followed her big outing with two victories over visiting Hawai'i on Monday, Feb. 10. Antonaña Iriarte and doubles partner Kristin Buth dismissed Xenia Suworowa and Paulina Petriskova, 8-3. She then posted a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over the Rainbow Wahine's Cindy Nguyen for her sixth consecutive win in singles play.

For her efforts, Antonaña Iriarte went from an unranked singles player to No. 35 in the national standings. She has yet to drop a set in singles competition this season.

SDSU will travel to Seattle, Wash., to take on the 41st-ranked Huskies and No. 35 Saint Mary's. The matches are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 14 at 1:30 pm and Saturday, Feb. 15 at noon, respectively.
