Women’s Tennis to face No. 33 Arizona State
Feb. 28, 2018
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women’s tennis team hits the road Friday, March 2, when it takes on No. 33 Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. First serve in Friday’s dual is set for 1:30 p.m. MT at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
A familiar face on the SDSU spring schedule, the Aztecs faced a then 30th-ranked ASU team just over a year ago at home at the Aztec Tennis Center, falling 6-0 to the Sun Devils.
The ranked Sun Devils (5-3) look to remain unbeaten at home after dropping two road matches to ranked opponents, falling 4-2 to No. 20 Kentucky last Friday and dropping a narrow 4-3 decision to No. 14 Ohio State on Sunday. The Sun Devils boast two ranked players in singles—No. 84 Lauryn John-Baptiste and No. 107 Savannah Slaysman—as well as two doubles pairs—No. 27 Slaysman/Tereza Kolarova and No. 46 Kelley Anderson/Nicole Fossa Huergo.
The Aztecs, 6-6, dropped two straight last weekend and snapped its impressive six-match doubles win streak with a 4-0 loss to Hawai’i on Sunday. Though doubles was scratched from last Saturday’s schedule vs. Grand Canyon due to the threat of rain, the Lopes still managed a 4-2 win over SDSU, claiming dubs on courts two, three, five and six, while senior Jana Buth snagged a 6-1, 6-3 singles win over Martina Lo Pomo in the top seed and junior Jenny Moinard topped Valentina Mokrova, 6-4, 7-6 (3) on court four.
