SDSU Women's Tennis to Host No. 75 Louisville Friday
March 12, 2014
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team returns to The Mesa to begin a three-match homestand, starting with No. 75 Louisville on Friday, March 14, at 2 p.m. The Aztecs are 5-3 at the Aztec Tennis Center this season.
The Cardinals were scheduled to play two matches last weekend, one of which against Denver was cancelled on Saturday due to rain. Louisville is coming off a win over North Texas last Friday on the road, 4-0, which lifted its season record to 8-2. The Kentucky-based school is 2-2 in matches away from home and boasts one nationally-ranked doubles team in Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine, which stands at No. 11.
The last time San Diego State squared-off against Louisville was in March of 2012, dropping the decision 5-2, and was the only time in history the two schools competed against each other. The Aztecs were unable to pick up the doubles point but tallied two wins in singles as Julia Wais handed a loss to Fellerhoff and Laura Antonaña Iriarte forced a three-set victory against Manuela Velasquez.
Last Friday, the Aztecs fell short to No. 16 California on the road, 5-2. SDSU started off strong by clinching the doubles point but could not hang on against the Golden Bears and their team of nationally-ranked singles players. No. 37 Antonaña Iriarte was able to pull an upset against No. 26 Anett Schutting, earning a win in three sets in San Diego State's eventual loss to California.
SDSU is 5-8 on the season as it looks to pick up another win this week against Louisville. The Aztecs will continue their homestand next week by facing Harvard, on March 19, at 2 p.m.
