Full Slate of MW Tennis Set for Aztec Tennis Center
March 21, 2012
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis squad opens Mountain West action this weekend and will play host to three other squads, who will compete at Aztec Tennis Center in neutral-site matches.
SDSU will begin the seven-match MW slate on Saturday, March 24, vs. Colorado State at noon PT. At the same time, 61st-ranked Wyoming will be taking on No. 67 UNLV. Then on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT, the Aztecs will play host to the Cowgirls, while the Rebels face the Rams.
San Diego State (4-9) had its two-match winning streak snapped last week when Louisville dealt it a 5-2 loss at Aztec Tennis Center. The decision was one of the few times SDSU had dropped the doubles point. In fact, the Aztecs, through 13 matches, have claimed the doubles point nine times in 2012.
SDSU has dominated its MW-opening opponent, CSU, having won all 17 matches in the history of the series. The last three Aztecs-Rams matches have resulted in 6-1 SDSU wins and the 2008 meeting was a 7-0 sweep.
San Diego State enters the match with Wyoming having won 12 of the 14 all-time get-togethers. The Cowgirls' two victories, however, have come in the last three meetings. The Aztecs lost the regular-season meeting in 2010, 4-3, before returning the favor in 2011 by notching a 4-3 win. Then at the 2011 conference tournament, the Cowgirls squeaked out a 4-3 victory in the quarterfinals.
In Mountain West openers, San Diego State is 4-3 in its last seven, but is 2-1 when the conference opener takes place in San Diego. This is the 13th season of MW play and is just the fourth time the Aztecs have started the league schedule at home (2000, 2003, 2009, 2012).
Following the two-match Mountain West homestand, SDSU will travel to Las Vegas for another pair of conference outings against TCU and New Mexico. The match with the Horned Frogs is slated for March 31 and the clash with the Lobos is set for April 1. First serve for both matches is set for 10 a.m. PT at Fertitta Tennis Complex.
