Aztecs Look To Clinch Share Of MW Title
The 41st-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team will travel to Colorado to put its 10-match win streak and perfect conference record on the line as the Aztecs look to clinch a share of the Mountain West title. Currently, SDSU sits on top of the league standings with a 17-4 overall record, 5-0 in conference play. If the Aztecs can take two of three matches this weekend, they will ensure themselves at least a share of the league title, the first in 10 years for SDSU.
Up first, San Diego State will face host Colorado State on April 18 at 1 pm MT. Friday, April 19 will see Wyoming matched up against the Aztecs. SDSU will conclude Mountain West and regular season action by facing off against Air Force at 10 am MT on April 20.
Scouting The Rams
Colorado State will enter Thursday's match 0-6 in Mountain West action and owns a 3-13 overall record on the season. The Rams' wins have come against New Mexico State, Rhode Island and Cal State Los Angeles. Last season, SDSU swept Colorado State, 7-0, at Aztec Tennis Center.
Head coach John Messick is in his 28th season with the women's tennis program at Colorado State. Since 1998, the Rams have held regional rankings six times, rising as high as 11th in the 2006-07 season.
Scouting The Cowgirls
Wyoming is 9-10 overall this season and has posted a 3-3 league mark. The Cowgirls earned their three conference wins against Air Force, Colorado State and New Mexico. The Aztecs have yet to face Air Force and Colorado State but swept New Mexico, 7-0, on April 6. Last season, San Diego State defeated Wyoming, 5-2, at Aztec Tennis Center.
Dean Clower is in his fifth season on the coaching staff of the women's tennis program at Wyoming, serving four years as an assistant coach before being promoted to head coaching duties in the spring of 2012. After taking over the program, Clower led the team to a 14-9 overall record and a 5-2 record in the Mountain West last season. Wyoming finished tied for second, the highest finish in program history.
Scouting The Falcons
Air Force stands at 13-8 overall and 2-4 in the Mountain West this season. The two conference wins for the Falcons came at the expense of Colorado State and New Mexico. Air Force will also conclude its league play this weekend by facing San Diego State and UNLV. Last season, the Aztecs downed the Falcons, 5-2, at the Air Force Academy.
Kim Gidley is in her 14th season as head coach of the women's team and the first civilian head coach in the 31-year history of the program. Gidley earned her 100th career victory during the 2005-06 season and has led the team to consecutive 16-win seasons.
Last Time Out
The Aztecs maintained their hold on first place in the Mountain West standings and a spotless 5-0 league record this week. SDSU continued conference play by facing No. 55 Fresno State and Nevada on consecutive days in Las Vegas. San Diego State defeated both MW foes by an identical 4-3 score. The Aztecs win streak was extended to 10 consecutive matches on Tuesday as they swept UC San Diego at Aztec Tennis Center. Junior Laura Antonana Iriarte and freshman Michela Casanova are both also riding 10-match win streaks in singles play following this weekend's action.
