April 22, 2013
SAN DIEGO -
The 41st-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team has earned the top seed at this week's Mountain West women's tennis Tournament, which will be held at the United States Air Force Academy Tennis Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Aztecs will take on the winner of Thursday's matchup between No. 8 New Mexico and No. 9 Colorado State on Friday, April 26 at 10 am MT.
Earlier this season, SDSU swept both of Friday's potential opponents. On April 6, the Aztecs easily handled the Lobos, 7-0, at Aztec Tennis Center. More recently on April 18, San Diego State swept all singles matches, as doubles were not played, against the Rams in Greeley, Colo. The pair of decisive wins were just a sampling of SDSU's perfect 8-0 league record.
Friday's winner will move onto the semifinals on Saturday, April 27 at 10 am MT, and will face the winner of the No. 4 Nevada and No. 5 Boise State showdown. The Aztecs just edged the Wolf Pack, 4-3, on April 14 in a neutral site match held in Las Vegas. The 6-1 victory over the Broncos came at home for SDSU on April 7.
The victor of the conference championship will take the Mountain West's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. This season's tournament will be held in at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill., from May 16-27.
San Diego State enters the league championship as sole owners of the conference title, a perfect 8-0 Mountain West record, a 20-win season and a 13-match win streak.
