Aztecs Look To Continue Winning At Championships
SDSU clinched its first outright Mountain West title against conference championship host Air Force on April 20 when the Aztecs downed the Falcons, 6-1. The match also marked the 13th-straight win for San Diego State and brought SDSU to a perfect 8-0 in league play.
Scouting The Mountain West
New Mexico - San Diego State swept the New Mexico Lobos, 7-0, on April 6 at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs swept doubles action to notch the first point. SDSU also won in all six singles matches without having to advance to a third set. The No. 8 seed Lobos will open the conference championships by facing Colorado State in the first round match on Thursday at 10 am MT.
Boise State - The Aztecs defeated Boise State, 6-1, to earn their third consecutive conference win on April 7. San Diego State claimed the doubles point and dropped only one match in second singles. The Broncos will take on fourth-seeded Nevada at 10 am MT on Friday.
Fresno State - SDSU downed the No. 55 Fresno State Bulldogs, 4-3, on April 13 to stay atop the Mountain West standings. At the time, the Bulldogs had been the only other team to post a perfect league record. The 48th-ranked Aztecs fell behind early after dropping the doubles point. San Diego State battled back in singles to win four of the matches and emerge with the win. Fresno State finished up MW play in a tie for second in the conference standings. The third-seeded Bulldogs will No. 6 Wyoming at 2 pm MT on Friday, April 26 to open their play in the championships.
Nevada - The San Diego State women's tennis team edged Nevada, 4-3, on April 14 to remain undefeated in conference play. The Aztecs lost the doubles point and earned just enough in singles play to clinch the victory. The fourth-seeded Wolf Pack will face No. 5 Boise State at 10 am MT on Friday.
Colorado State - The Aztecs traveled to Colorado to conclude the regular season, April 18-20. In their first of three matches, San Diego State defeated Colorado State, 6-0 on Thursday. Due to the weather, the match had to be moved indoors to Greeley, Colo. The Rams and Aztecs were forced to play on four courts and would forgo doubles play. SDSU swept Colorado State in singles play to hold on to the Mountain West top spot. The Rams will play in the league championships' first match, facing No. 8 New Mexico on Thursday at 10 am MT.
Wyoming - SDSU stretched its winning streak to 12-straight matches and guaranteed the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament with their 5-1 win over Wyoming on April 19. Doubles was not played due to teams moving indoors caused by inclement weather. The Aztecs won five of the singles matches, dropping one point in fourth singles. The Cowgirls will face off against third-seeded Fresno State at 2pm MT on Friday.
Air Force - The San Diego State women's tennis team clinched the Mountain West title in its season finale against Air Force on April 20 in a 6-1 victory. The 41st-ranked Aztecs claimed their 13th-straight dual match, closing out their regular season schedule 20-4 overall and a perfect 8-0 in league play. SDSU earned the doubles point and won five of the singles matches, dropping one point in fourth singles. The championship host Falcons will face No. 2 UNLV at 2pm MT on Friday.
