Aztecs Set to Co-Host Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team will participate in its second tournament of the fall season when it travels to Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego to compete in the Wilson/ITA West Regional Championships, Oct 18-22. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this weekend's event will earn automatic berths into the ITA National Indoor Championships, Nov. 1-4 in Columbus, Ohio.

Along with the University of San Diego, SDSU will serve as co-host of the 16-team tournament, which gets underway on Thursday with first-round doubles matches beginning at 9 a.m.

Two Aztec duos will be in action on Thursday morning. Ozge Atalay and Milana Yusupov will square off against Brittany Kausen and Bryanna Ojeda of UC Santa Barbara, while Sisse Nielsen and Kathryn Kitts will face Julia Sandborn and Marie Tanaka of Hawai'i. The eighth seed of Holly Bagshaw and Eliska Krausova, along with Esther Cadua and Julia Trunk, each received a first-round bye and will begin doubles play on Friday in the round of 32.

In singles action, six Aztecs are slated to take the court in the opening round of play. The upper bracket is scheduled to get underway at 10:30 a.m., as Nielsen will square off against Erin Wiesener of Cal State Fullerton, Trunk will face Marie Tanaka of Hawai'i, Cadua will go up against Northridge's Canna Furuta and Colman will battle Milov Teeling of USD.

In the lower half of the bracket, which is scheduled to begin first-round play at noon, Milana Yusupov will face Julia Sandborn of Hawai'i and Atalay will take on Fullerton's Karina Akhmedova. Krausova, the 15th singles seed, and Bagshaw each received a first-round bye.

Sarah Fansler of USC is the No. 1 singles seed and is followed by UCLA's Riza Zalameda and Tracy Lin, and Arizona State's Nadia Abdala, while the Bruin duo of Zalameda/Schnack are the top seed in the doubles draw.
