ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The San Diego State Track and Field team kicked off the Mountain West Indoor Championships on Thursday. Only one Aztec was competing in the first day, Asia Smith in the pentathlon, who placed 12th out of 17 competitors.

Smith, a freshman from Escondido, Calif., had a strong start, grabbing third place in the first event, the 60-meter hurdles. Her time of 8.77 was a career-best and just 0.09 off the first place finisher, Fresno State's Tiera Norman.

In the second event, the high jump, Smith cleared 5-03.00 (1.60m), which was a quarter-inch off her previous best jump and earned her a tie for 11th place.

Smith took 14th in the shot put, with a toss of 30-03.50 (9.23m). She followed that up with a seventh place finish in the long jump, with a mark of 17-10.75 (5.45m).

In the 800, the pentathlon's final event, Smith finished in 14th (2:39.14) to give her 3,443 total points.

On Friday, the meet starts with the long jump at 1 p.m. (MT), followed by the pole vault at 2 p.m. The qualifying rounds of the 60 hurdles, 400, 60-meter dash, 800 and 200 are also on Friday, beginning with the 60-meter hurdles at 2:00 p.m. The 400 meters is slated for 2:30 p.m., and the 60-meter dash is on tap for 3:00 p.m. The 800 will take place at 3:30 p.m., and the Aztecs' day closes with the 200 meters at 4:30 p.m.

Saturday kicks off with the pole vault finals and the triple jump with both events beginning at 11:30 a.m. The finals of the 60 hurdles, 400, 60-meter dash, 800 and 200 will occur is 20-minute increments, starting with the 60-meter hurdles at 12:20 p.m. SDSU closes the meet with the 4x400-meter relay at 2:30 p.m. The awards ceremony will immediately follow completion of the events.
