SAN DIEGO - Over 700 athletes competed under cold and blustery conditions in Saturday's 24th-annual Aztec Track and Field Classic held on the Choc Sportsman Oval at the SDSU Sports Deck. The weather did not affect San Diego State, however, which recorded first-place finishes in the 4x400 relay, long jump and high jump events and had three of its pole vaulters set NCAA provisional qualifying marks.

Freshman Shayla Balentine, junior Jesika Englebretson and senior Tricia Gutierrez placed 2-3-4, respectively, in the pole vault. All three of their marks were NCAA provisional ones, with Balentine's 13-00.25 mark tying the season-best vault she set on March 17 at the Trojan Classic. Englebretson and Gutierrez had identical 12-06.25 marks, with Englebretson taking third due to fewer misses. Englebretson's mark was a career best.

Freshman Alisha Lasswell recorded her second victory in the high jump in as many weeks with a season- and personal-best mark of 5-07.00. She jumped 5-05.00 and took first place in the same event at last weekend's Trojan Invite.

Sophomore Megan Schauermann, who was competing for her first time in a collegiate meet, took top honors in the long jump with a season-best mark of 19-04.25. Shauerman is also a member of the Aztec volleyball program. Junior Leslie Miller completed a 1-2 sweep of the long jump with a 19-02.00 second-place finish.

The Aztecs' 4x400-meter relay team raced to a top finish of 3:47.31.

SDSU also had a strong showing in the sprint events. Junior Melinda Smedley took second in both the 100- and 200-meter dash. Her time of 11.89 in the 100 meters is a season best, and she clocked in at 24.24 in the 200 meters. Sophomore Tonette Dyer and junior Jini Hogg placed second (54.42) and third (54.85), respectively, in the 400 meters.

Junior Jennifer Stakiw placed third in the 800-meter run (2:13.30).

SDSU will be in action again next week, competing at the Cal-Nevada State meet to be held in Fresno on March 29-30 (Fri.-Sat.).
