Jan. 8, 2013
NEW ORLEANS - The San Diego State track and field team is ranked 20th in the country in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) indoor preseason poll. The USTFCCCA preseason poll, which was announced today, is largely based on the top returners from each school and early performances from this season so far.
The Aztecs have 38.39 points in the computer poll, 5.78 points behind 19th-ranked Michigan (44.17). The lone team in the top 25 from the Mountain West, SDSU is ahead of No. 21 Nebraska (36.45), No. 22 Illinois (35.25), No. 23 Michigan State (35.11), No. 24 Auburn (34.28) and No. 25 Illinois State (32.50). Clemson (150.90) is the top team in the indoor preseason poll, followed by Kansas (147.20) and Oregon (146.75).
San Diego State returns two athletes who competed in the NCAA Indoor Championships last year. Junior Shanieka Thomas finished seventh in the triple jump and later was the runner-up in the event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Senior Kelsy Hintz, meanwhile, was 15th at last year's indoor meet and ninth in the outdoor meet.
The Aztecs also return two others who earned All-American accolades at last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships. Junior Allison Reaser, a two-time defending pentathlon and heptathlon Mountain West champion, finished sixth at last year's NCAA outdoor meet en route to earning first-team USTFCCCA honors. Senior Alex Evans garnered second-team USTFCCCA accolades in the triple jump with a 14th-place showing at last year's championships.
SDSU kicks off its 2013 indoor season on Jan. 18-19 at the Cherry and Silver Invite in Albuquerque, N.M.
