Jan. 9, 2014
NEW ORLEANS - San Diego State track and field senior Shanieka Thomas (St. Andrew, Jamaica/Vere Technical HS) has been named to the Women's Preseason Watch List for The Bowerman Trophy, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) announced today.
Thomas is one of just 10 athletes in the country on the initial list for the award, which is given out annually to the top collegiate track and field athlete in the country, and is the only jumper. Additionally, she is the only MW student-athlete (female or male) to make the watch list in the award's history. The Bowerman Trophy is track and field's Heisman Trophy.
Thomas is the reigning NCAA triple jump champion after winning the event at the outdoor championship meet in June. Thomas, who was the runner-up at the NCAA Indoor Championships last year as well, qualified for the World University Games and the Jamaican National Championships last summer.
In her junior season, Thomas also set Mountain West and school records in both the indoor (46-02.60) and outdoor triple jump (46-05.25). For her efforts in 2013, Thomas was named the MW Female Athlete of the Year (includes all MW sports), the MW Women's Outdoor and Indoor Student-Athlete of the Year, the USTFCCCA Indoor West Region Field Athlete of the Year and the MW Women's Indoor Track and Field Most Outstanding Performer.
In all, Thomas won three individual MW titles - outdoor triple jump and long jump, and indoor triple jump - and was a member of two winning relays - indoor and outdoor 4x400. She also earned six all-conference honors and was named the MW Track and Field Athlete of the Week on five occasions.
For her career, Thomas is a two-time first-team outdoor and indoor USTFCCCA All-American (2012-13), a 2011 second-team indoor USTFCCCA All-American, a four-time MW outdoor champion and a three-time MW indoor winner.
The rest of the athletes on the preseason list are Kamaria Brown (Texas A&M), Abbey D'Agostino (Dartmouth), Phyllis Francis (Oregon), Anna Jelmini (Arizona State), Shalaya Kipp (Colorado), Cory McGee (Florida), Laura Roesler (Oregon), Ashley Spencer (Texas) and Lindsay Vollmer (Kansas).
Past winners of the prestigious women's award have included Colorado's Jenny Barringer (2009), Virginia Tech's Queen Harrison (2010), Texas A&M's Jessica Beard (2011), LSU's Kimberly Duncan (2012) and Clemson's Brianna Rollins (2013).
The Aztecs, who won both the MW indoor and outdoor championship meets last year, officially kick off their season on Jan. 24-25 at the Cherry & Silver Collegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.
