Jan. 28, 2014
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State's Jasmine Burrell (Torrance, Calif./North Torrance HS) has been named the Mountain West Women's Track and Field Co-Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. It is the first career weekly honor for the junior thrower.
In the Aztecs' first meet of the year at New Mexico's Cherry & Silver Invitational, Burrell posted two solid outings. On Friday, Burrell finished second of 27 entrants in the weight throw with a school-record mark of 66 feet, 9 ¼ inches (20.25m). The throw broke her own school record in the event by more than two feet (64-01.25), which was set in 2013. It was the best mark in the MW this year and the 14th best in the nation.
On Saturday, Burrell came in fifth out of 39 in the shot put with a toss of 50-06.00 (15.39m). The 50-06.00 leads the MW and ranks 39th in the country.
Burrell has won two MW titles over her career, including the shot put (51-10.50) at the 2013 MW Indoor Championships and the discus throw (181-05) at the 2013 MW Outdoor Championships. The Torrance, Calif., native has been named to the all-league team three times (2013 indoor shot put and weight throw, 2013 outdoor discus throw).
SDSU is back in action this weekend (Friday and Saturday) at the Howie Ryan Invitational & Multi's in Houston, Texas.
