Shanieka Thomas Named MW T&F Athlete of the Week
Feb. 18, 2014
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State's Shanieka Thomas (St. Andrew, Jamaica/Vere Technical) has been named the Mountain West Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced today. It is the seventh weekly honor for the senior and second by an Aztec this season (also Jasmine Burrell on Jan. 28).
Thomas won the triple jump at the Don Kirby Collegiate Elite Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M., in her first meet of the year with a mark of 45 feet, 3 inches (13.79m). Thomas, the defending NCAA outdoor triple jump champion and one of 10 on the preseason watch list for The Bowerman Trophy (top collegian), beat out 27 other entrants in the event.
The 45-03.00 is the best mark in the country this year and the second-best in MW history, trailing only her 46-02.50 (14.08m) set last year at the same Don Kirby Collegiate Elite. Thomas was runner-up in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships a year ago and has won the last four MW triple jump titles (2012-13 outdoor, 2012-13 indoor).
SDSU will defend its title at the Mountain West Championships from Feb.27-March 1 in USAFA, Colo.
