SDSU T&F's Thomas, Reaser Qualify for NCAA Champs
March 4, 2014
SAN DIEGO - The NCAA announced tonight that two San Diego State track and field athletes have qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The duo - Shanieka Thomas and Allison Reaser - will each compete on March 15 at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.
A senior, Thomas qualified in the indoor triple jump for the fourth consecutive year. Thomas, who was one of 10 on the preseason watch list for The Bowerman Trophy (top collegian), has finished second (2013), seventh (2012) and ninth (2011) in her three previous indoor championship meets, and is a two-time first-team USTFCCCA All-American (2012-13) and a second-team USTFCCCA All-American in 2011.
The defending NCAA outdoor champion in the triple jump, Thomas owns a season best of 45 feet, 3 inches (13.79m), which is the top mark in the country this year by eight inches over Florida's Ciarra Brewer (44-07.00 (13.59m)). Last weekend, Thomas claimed her third straight MW indoor triple jump title (2012-14) and fifth straight overall (also 2012-13 outdoor) with a leap of 44-05.25. Thomas has only competed in the event twice this season.
Also a senior, Reaser made it to the NCAA Indoor Championships for the first time of her career in the pentathlon with a school-record mark of 4,145 points last week at the MW Indoor Championships. Reaser, who has won six multi-event titles (2011-13 indoor pentathlon, 2011-13 outdoor heptathlon) at the MW Championships, easily broke her record of 3,971, which was set last year at the MW indoor meet.
The 4,145 points are the eighth most in the country this year and are within 100 points either way of 12 other competitors. Although this will be Reaser's first NCAA indoor meet, she has competed in three straight NCAA Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon, taking 18th (2011), sixth (2012) and eighth (2013). Reaser also was 12th in the heptathlon at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials and 13th at the 2013 U.S. Championships.
The five-event pentathlon kicks off on March 15 at 11 a.m. MT, while triple jump starts at 6 p.m. MT.
