NEW ORLEANS - San Diego State senior Shanieka Thomas has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women's West Region Field Athlete of the Year. It is the second straight year that Thomas earned the award.

Thomas, a St. Andrew, Jamaica, native, qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships for the fourth consecutive year. The defending NCAA outdoor champion in the triple jump, Thomas owns a season best of 45 feet, 3 inches (13.79m), which is the top mark in the country this year by eight inches over Florida's Ciarra Brewer (44-07.00 (13.59m)). Two weeks ago, she claimed her third consecutive Mountain West indoor triple jump title (2012-14) and fifth straight overall (also 2012-13 outdoor) with a leap of 44-05.25. Thomas has only competed in the event twice this season.

One of 10 on the preseason watch list for The Bowerman Trophy (top collegian), Thomas is a two-time first-team indoor USTFCCCA All-American (2012-13) and a second-team USTFCCCA All-American in 2011.

Thomas (triple jump) and Allison Reaser (pentathlon) will each be representing the Aztecs at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M., while the rest of the team will now be competing at the UCSD Collegiate Challenge in La Jolla in SDSU's outdoor opener.
