April 1, 2014
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State's Jasmine Burrell has been named the Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced today. It is the second career weekly honor for Burrell and first outdoor award. The Aztecs have now won the award four times this year (Burrell - twice, Kristen Brown and Shanieka Thomas).
A junior, Burrell had a big weekend at the 36th annual Aztec Invitational, winning the discus throw, taking second in the shot put and seventh in the hammer throw. Burrell's efforts helped 11th-ranked SDSU finish second among the five Division I scoring teams with 157 points, trailing only No. 2 Oregon's 159.
On Friday, Burrell finished seventh in the invitational hammer with a heave of 174 feet, 2 inches (53.08 meters), which ranks seventh in the MW this year. On Saturday, Burrell won the invitational discus (out of 21 entrants) with a mark of 173-07 (52.92m). That mark leads the conference and ranks 15th in the nation. Burrell also came in second (out of 19) in the invitational shot put on Saturday in 52-06.50 (16.01m). The 52-06.50 is the third-best distance in school history, leads the Mountain West and ranks 14th in the nation this year.
San Diego State is back in action this weekend (April 4-5) at the Cal/Nevada Championships on the campus of UC San Diego in La Jolla, Calif. The Aztecs have won three consecutive Cal/Nevada Championships.
