No. 25 Aztec T&F Competes at NCAA West Prelims This Weekend

No. 25 San Diego State track and field heads to the Lone Star State for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds, hosted by the University of Texas, Thurs., May 25 through Sat., May 27. The meet features the top 48 declared athletes in each individual event and the top 25 relay teams in the west region.

The Scarlet and Black qualified 13 student-athletes for the NCAA West Prelims. Seven Aztecs qualified for the preliminary rounds in multiple events: Ashley Henderson (100, 200 and 4x100-meter relay), Simone Glenn (100, 200 and 4x100-meter relay), Micha Auzenne (100, 100 hurdles and 4x100 relay), Lisa-Anne Barrow (200, 4x400-meter relay and long jump), Rochene Smith (100, 4x100), Andrenette Knight (400 hurdles, 4x400) and Rachel Alesi (shot put, discus throw). Marissa Berry (pole vault), Bonnie Draxler (pole vault), Je’Neal Ainsworth (triple jump), Sierra Brabham-Lawrence (100 hurdles), Tyra Lea (4x400-meter relay) and Monique McPherson (4x400-meter relay) also qualified for the preliminary round.

The meet begins Thursday at 11 a.m. (CT) with Berry and Draxler’s appearances in the pole vault. Knight runs the first round of the 400 hurdles at 4:30 p.m. (CT), followed by SDSU’s best-represented event, the first round of the 100-meter dash, at 6:30 p.m. (CT), with Auzenne, Glenn, Henderson and Smith competing in the race. Barrow closes out the day at 7:15 p.m. (CT) with the first round of the long jump.

On Friday, Alesi will look to advance to her second straight NCAA Championships in the discus throw with the first round set for 12:15 p.m. (CT). Auzenne and Brabham-Lawrence run the 100 hurdles’ first round at 4:30 p.m. (CT). The quarterfinal of the 100 meters and 400 hurdles are scheduled for 6 p.m. (CT) and 7 p.m. (CT), respectively. Barrow, Glenn and Henderson are on tap for the first round of the 200 at 7:30 p.m. (CT).

Alesi makes her second appearance of the meet on Saturday at 6 p.m. (CT) in the shot put’s first round. At the same time, Ainsworth competes in the first round of the triple jump and Auzenne, Glenn, Smith and Henderson (with senior Starlynn Singleton serving as an alternate) run the quarterfinal of the 4x100-meter relay. The quarterfinal of the 100 hurdles are at 7:05 p.m. (CT) and the 200 meters quarterfinal is at 7:35 p.m. (CT). The meet closes with the 4x400-meter relay quarterfinal at 9:25 p.m. (CT), run by Lea, Barrow, Knight, and McPherson (Glenn will serve as an alternate).

Four of the Aztecs participating in this year’s West Prelims have experience at the NCAA Championships. Alesi (discus), Auzenne (4x100, 100 hurdles), Glenn (4x100), Henderson (4x100, 200) advanced to the national meet last year after their performances at the 2016 NCAA West Prelims.
