March 2, 2018

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State volleyball star Deja Harris is competing in the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryout this weekend, March 2-4, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Nearly 230 athletes from 91 colleges from across the country will be vying for spots on the U.S. Women's National Team and the U.S. Collegiate National Team program.

A native of Las Vegas, Nev., Harris received all-MW recognition for the third straight season in 2017 after leading the Aztecs in blocks, both overall (1.28/set) and in conference matches (1.36/set), as well as hitting percentage (.344 overall). Despite drawing constant double coverage at the middle blocker position, the SDSU junior tied for second in blocks during the MW schedule and ranked third in overall matches. She also occupied the third spot in attack percentage during the regular season and ranked eighth against league opponents (.303).

In addition, Harris was seventh in the MW with 3.83 points per set in overall matches last fall and ranked 10th against conference foes with 3.76 points per frame.

For the season, Harris posted double-digit kill totals in 21 of 31 matches, including 11 in league competition. On Nov. 13, she was named MW Offensive Player of the Week after averaging 3.62 kills per set and hitting .458 in a pair of victories over UNLV and New Mexico.

Under the direction of U.S. Women's National Team head coach Karch Kiraly, this weekend's tryout will feature four sessions consisting of three waves, beginning Friday from 2 p.m.-8 p.m. MT. Saturday's sessions are scheduled to get underway at 8 a.m. MT, focusing on service/reception as well as individual work, followed by middle-centered and out-of-system emphasis at 2 p.m. In addition, Sunday's final session is slated to commence at 7:30 a.m. MT, highlighted by tournament-style play, along with 16-18 athletes selected by the U.S. Women's National Team staff, who will participate in a "USA" training session.

Selected athletes for the U.S. Women's National Team may begin their training in Anaheim, Calif., as early as the spring of 2018, or when an athlete's scholastic or professional club season has concluded.
