Aztecs Fall to USD in Their First Match of the Diggin' It 2000 Tourney

The Aztec women's volleyball team fell to the University of San Diego three games to zero in their first match at the Diggin' It 2000 tournament at Cox Arena. The match was the season opener for both squads. The tone of the match was set by San Diego's .301 hitting percentage compared to San Diego State's .174. Nicole Akpoiaye led the team with twelve kills. Freshmen, Aspen McPartland and Zlatina Anguelova both debuted with eleven kills and nine digs each. Senior Amy Hallquist had ten kills and seven digs. Torero Ann Mott kept San Diego out of trouble with nine digs and Noel Frohman led the team in kills with seventeen. In the first match of the tournament, 14th-ranked UC Santa Barbara won 3-2 over 10th-ranked University of Arizona. UCSB was forced into a fifth game after winning the first two. Saturday the Aztecs will play the University of Arizona at 1:00 p.m. and UC Santa Barbara at at 5:00 p.m.
